Instagram Hashtag Update

Hi ladies,

If you love Insta and haven’t seen the latest update (they are always making updates), then have a watch of my short video below. Screenshots are also below, showing you what I’m talking about!

As you probably know, hashtags are hugely important to reach your ideal clients and audience. Every day people will go and search for the type of content they are looking for via searching for that hashtag. So by using the hashtags that you think your audience are looking for, you increase your chances of being found.

You have always been able to click through from a # that you or someone else uses to see other IG users using that hashtag, or you’ve been able to go to the search and explore section and look up a particular hashtag that way. Either way, you’ll be able to find the particular content that you are interested in.

The explore section is usually a little random to say the least, with some content that is suited to you, some that is not something you’d go looking for, but you find yourself being engrossed in and other posts are just not suited to you at all.

IG update

However, the latest update allows you to tailor the type of content that you are looking to follow and your feed becomes much more specific to you. You can even train the tool to fine-tune the content that you like.

To show how much you like the content- give it a like or a comment and IG will show you even more of that type of post. They will select a collection from that # and show you in your main feed.

If you don’t like a post, click on the 3 dots on the top right-hand corner and you can choose to let IG know that you don’t like it. It’ll learn to not show you that type of post again. Clever- aye!

The more you help Insta learn about what you do and don’t like, the more it’ll learn what to show you more of.

Here is the new feature. When you first click on a hashtag, you’ll see this message pop up.

Click got it and you’ll see a blue ‘follow’ button for your selected hashtag. Click follow to follow that hashtag.

You’ll start seeing more posts in your feed with the # that you have chosen to follow. This can still be varied even without that #, so you can fine-tune the tool to learn what you’d like to see more or less of. If you decide you’d like to see less of a certain type of post, click on the menu button of a post- the 3 dots in the right-hand corner.

Then simply click on ‘See fewer posts like this’.

If you like what you see- send the post some love, either double clicking to send it a red heart or even better, leaving a comment. Insta will then know you like what you are seeing!

Do you ever check if you are in the top 9 for a certain hashtag? All you need to do is click on a particular hashtag that you use and you’ll be taken through to the page above. The top 9 are the top posts using that hashtag, then the ones below are the most recent uses.

The top 2 posts on this screenshot above are both mine, so I know that two posts are in the top 9 posts for that hashtag of over 34,000 posts. Take a look at yours, you’ll often see your posts in the top 9 that you didn’t even know existed!

The top posts are now hugely important to this new rollout. When people go over to follow a hashtag, what is the first thing they’ll see? Yes, the top 9 and you want to be in that section. You’ll increase your exposure and increase your following!

8 Instagram Updates

Hey beautiful ladies.

Have you noticed the latest Instagram updates? Keeping true to form for 2017, they have continued with the regular updates of late.

 Here are the latest IG updates:

  1. IG Poll

I love this feature. To access it go to your IG stories and add/take a pic as normal, then go to stickers. If you aren’t sure, this is the square smiley face in the top right hand corner when you have taken or added a photo.

Once you’ve clicked on stickers, you’ll see the option of POLL. Click here and you can add a space for a question and a choice of 2 answers, such as yes and no. Then click done. As your followers answer your question, you’ll receive the answers to your poll. So when you look, you’ll see the current score and who has answered.

2. New IG Stickers

We all know IG stories always have a good selection of stickers- such as location, temperature, day, time etc, but have you seen the new Halloween and Autumn selection? We’ve got pumpkins, eyeballs, devil horns and hands to name a few. The autumn selection include a cup of tea, leaves, acorns, a bobble hat and logs.

3. IG Stories Filters

Love the new Halloween style face filters. We have a blood dripping zombie, beat-up zombie, pitch black with light up face, alien style and foggy. As always my description of these face filters no doubt are completely wrong, but you get my drift!

4. Shared Lives on Instagram Stories

This is a biggy. You now have the ability to add someone to your live video- great for chatting and interviewing others. It gives you a split screen for you and a freind to love stream! I don’t have this feature just yet, but it’s being rolled out.

The ability to access IG Stories on your desktop too is also being rolled out!

5. Creative Tools for Stories

Insta have launched a new alignment tool so you can line up your elements. When you add stickers, text etc you’ll see some blue lines pop up. They are there to help you centre text and other elements and let you know if any of the elements will be covered when people are watching your stories.

 

6. Improved Comment Controls

IG launched this a few months ago, but have improved the tools when people comment on your posts. For instance if they comment using bad language you have the ability to block them. You can choose which comments to allow.

7. Shopify Integration

This is by far the biggest update and is huge for those using Shopify. It allows Shopify users to basically use Ig as another selling platform. It currently uses Facebook shopping items and pulls them over to IG (easily set up with a few clicks). Then you can tag any items in IG with a product contained in your catalogue. This allows people to click on the picture and purchase immediately. You’ll be able to tell if a picture is ‘shoppable’ by a small white shopping bag icon in the top right hand corner of the screen. Tap to see ‘tap to view products’ then they’ll see the information. Click again to be able to purchase. All from Instagram! That is amazing and a really big deal.

8. Threaded Comments

This feature has been out for a little while now, but I thought I’d include it as it’s pretty cool!

Previously, IG would show all comments in a linear format. Now however, if you reply to somebody, it’ll show directly under their comment, (like FB) allowing an easier and more streamlined conversation to encourage engagement from your followers!

How to make simple yet stunning graphics with Canva

This week is a video recording for you for Canva.

I’m sure lots of you are familiar with Canva already but for those who aren’t I’ve recorded a quick tutorial of the basics to get you started.

I must admit, I use Canva most days for myself and clients, so I am a huge fan. I often wondered what I did before Canva existed. You can create simple graphics, quickly and easily using various colours, logos, images and fonts. They offer 1000’s of free images and templates helping you get started.

Instagram Update- Face Filters

Instagram continue their snapchat onslaught with the addition of face filters

Over the past few months, we have seen loads of new features being added to Instagram, many of which have a certain similarity to Snapchat.

Many people had predicted this latest addition, and yesterday it came- IG launched face filters to IG stories- very like those we love on Snapchat.

 

You can currently choose from eight live filters with the same features that Snapchat offer- such as twitching ears and noses. Here are the list of the current filters

  • Golden crown
  • Koala bear
  • Nerd
  • Bunny
  • Pink butterfly crown
  • Ice Queen
  • Diva
  • The ‘magic touch’ filter that makes you look like a better you!

How can I access these IG Story face filters?

Go to your story by clicking the camera icon in the top right hand corner of the home page

There is now a new face icon In the bottom right hand corner- click on that

This will bring up the selection of filters for you to choose from.

You can then add geo-location tags and write anything you like on the photo too.

You have the choice to save the photo- send to friends or add to your story.

They also work with the Boomerang video clips

They work on both back and forward facing cameras.

So far, I’d say they seem like a simlar version of the Snapchat filters- they don’t distort your face as much as some of the Snapchat- but these are the first few, so who knows what future launches will bring. IG have said they’d like these filters to be less wacky so they appear to a wider audience and not just the teenage group.

You’re going to have to excuse the wet hair on these pics- I got drenched on the school run (oh, the glamour!).

 

IG Rewind Mode

This new update also released the new rewind feature. This basically allows you to create clips, which you can then play backwards as a special effect.

There is a new hashtag sticker feature – much like the location stickers, allowing your viewers to click and go to all related content for that #. They can be added as text. 

 

IG Eraser Feature

Another part of this update is the eraser feature allowing you to erase anything you may have drawn. A great way to use this is to cover your image with one block colour and erase parts of it with the eraser to reveal the picture below.

  • Take a photo
  • Choose a colour
  • Hold your finger on the photo to make the whole screen your selected colour
  • Then use the eraser feature to erase parts of the colour as shown

The features are currently available in IG 10.21 for both Android and iOS.

 

Are you a Snapchat user? Will this current update stop you from using Snapchat? Personally, I only ever used SnapChat for the filters and I’m a bigger fan of Instagram overall, so I think my use of Snapchat will decrease and I can see a lot of people doing the same thing. Insta will only continue to add to their filters and improve on them.

The most common types of ads are

Conversions, and Traffic.

You are basically telling Facebook that you would like your ad optimized for the purpose of your ad.

 

Here are a few of the most popular ways to use FB ads.

 

 

  1. Increasing Your Facebook Likes.

Page like ads can be a great way to start growing your following and likes to your page and can be set up from as little as £1 or a $ a day.

If you are struggling to build your following and want an easy way to try and grow your following and improve the credibility of your Facebook page, these are a great way to start.

 

  1. List Building.

If you don’t have a big list and believe that increasing your list is your goal, then we can use Facebook’s list to encourage people to visit your opt-in or freebie so they are on your list. Once they are signed up, you can then send your list content that you’d like them to see. If you are selling a product, then these are great for offering a discount or free gift when a customer purchases. These are probably the most common, that I’m sure you have seen in your newsfeed.

 

  1. Sending customers/clients to your website

If you don’t want to offer a freebie or opt-in page straight off, but would like to increase the traffic to your website- such as a blog post, then make sure you choose something that offers amazing value content. If you have a video or blog post that is rich in content on your website or offers the reader the option to learn something, they’ll want to find out more, so make sure you offer an opt –in at this stage, encouraging them to sign up to our lost, so they can learn more value from you. When you next set up a FB ad, you can also re-target those people that have visited previously.

The perception for many small business owners is that

  1. Facebook ads don’t work
  2. Facebook ads are expensive

 

They do work, especially when used correctly and aimed at targeting the correct people. I’ve had first hand experience of using them and seeing how they work for me.

 

You can actually get started for as little as £/$1 a day, to see what result you get. When I run ads for clients, I’d recommend setting up at least 4 different ads to test out what works best for you, at approx. £5/$5 per ad/per day. A Facebook pixel can be installed in your website to track the conversions that your FB ad has generated.

When we are surrounded by clutter (even an organised mess) it can clutter our brain. In order to be more efficient and save time, give your work space a once-over, clear the things you don’t need around you, put up a great quote or affirmation and save time!

  1. Focus on one task at a time.

When we have a lot going on, It’s tempting to flit from one task to another, never actually completing one, before moving to something else. This can be extremely inefficient, as it takes time for our brains to re-program to each task, so we are way better off concentrating on one task at a time.

 

  1. Create a schedule.

I find sticking to a schedule makes me more focused and allows me to stay o target. If I don’t have a schedule that I have taken the time to write down the day’s tasks, I know I can get distracted and waste time doing unimportant tasks.

 

  1. Self Care

More important than we realise.

Drink water- keep hydrated and your energy levels will stay up.

Take breaks- I know we all like to work our socks off, and often don’t want to stop the task in hand, but taking a short break will help your energy levels.

Exercise- especially in the morning can help with our productivity levels and give us a boost to get through the day, work efficiently and save time.

 

  1. Organise in advance

Take the time the night before to think about the following day and write down your to-do list and what you want to achieve. Some people prefer to take the first 30mins of each day to do this, but whenever it suits you- this is so important.

  1. Outsource

Spend your time on the tasks that you do best, and save time by outsourcing tasks that others can do. Help decide what tasks are best outsourced by writing a list of tasks that you don’t enjoy, can’t do, or nee help with, or that take too much of your valuable time.

  1. Switch it off!

Every now and again we all need to take a break from our mobiles and time consuming social media.

Allow yourself a set time to go and check on your social, rather than feeling the need to respond to everything immediately.

 

  1. Is it urgent?

We need to work out the difference between what is urgent and important. If things aren’t urgent, such as emails, don’t feel the need to respond immediately. This can stop you mid-flow on a task in hand, and when you come back to that task, it takes time to get your brain engaged again!

  1. Schedule interruptions

Unfortunately, it’s a fact of life that interruptions and the unexpected can and will pop up, so always allow time to schedule in these last minute tasks. For instance, I can schedule in client work and my own work for each working hour Mon-Fri, but when I get a new client reach out asking for an appointment, then I’ll need to make time for that.

 

  1. Stay positive.

This may sound strange but think about it. When you are at the top of your game and you are feeling amazing, you have loads of clients or customers, you feel great and you are positive, you’ll get so much more done and be more efficient.

When you are feeling a little low, or have lost a client, or sales are slow, you won’t feel so great and you’ll start getting those niggling thoughts in your brain, ‘am I good enough?’ ‘I can’t do this’ ‘I can’t be successful’. This will do nothing but make you feel negative, with a mindset that won’t achieve and you’ll waste far too much time on these negative what-if thoughts!

Instagram Update!

 

Instagram announced yesterday that they now offer the option to save your live broadcasts.

This is an amazing new feature that many people will be thrilled with.

 

Until now one of the biggest issues with IG live video was that it appears in your IG stories and the video would disappear after 24hours. If you have created an amazing live video with great content, it always felt a huge waste that it would be gone and you couldn’t re-use it.

 

 

How to make a live video:

In Instagram, go to your home feed by clicking the house shape icon at the bottom left of the screen.

From here click the camera icon in the top left-hand corner of the screen. Scroll left at the bottom to LIVE. Your connection will be checked and you’ll be given a countdown of 3 when you will be live.

This will go out to all your followers and will stay on your IG stories for 24 hours.

 

How to save a live video:

When you are done. Click end video. You’ll then be taken to another screen. Click save in the top right-hand corner of the screen. The video will now be saved to your camera roll as well as added to your IG stories. Then click done!

Unfortunately, you can’t save the comments, likes or the number of viewers, but at least we can save the video, which is a definite step in the right direction.

 

According to the Instagram blog, we can expect many more features and Instagram updates this year, especially surrounding video! With so many great new features already released recently- I can’t wait to see more!

This feature was rolled out earlier this month for most users and quite frankly adds a completely new opportunity to users.

Instead of just being bale to post one picture or video with each post, you can now post up to 10, on a single IG post.

If you have ever juggled with which picture you prefer, don’t stress, just use them all!

It makes an amazing mini-explainer slideshow or teaching method. You can scroll through the images or videos one by one. You can tag users on individual pictures and even use different filters if you wanted to.

This is a really powerful new tool to encourage interaction and engagement for brands.

The idea is great to show off multiple pictures of new products or services or as a mini tutorial of how to do something.

At the bottom right-hand corner of your picture is a multi-page icon or it may say ‘select multiple’ click on this, then add up to 10 photos or videos from your gallery. You can rearrange them if required. You can tag people in each one or use filters on each one. When ready, press next like you usually would, write your post and share!

When followers see your post, they will also see the multi-page carousel icon- alerting them to the fact that you have posted a slideshow. This encourages followers to spend more tome scrolling through all your pictures!

IG are rolling out this new feature that allows you to place ads on Instagram stories. This is a great way to reach as many people in your target audience and to help build brand awareness.

How to set up an IG story Ad

This can be placed and managed through power editor or ads manager in Facebook.

When you select your marketing objective as ‘reach’ you now have stories as a placement option as well as feed within IG.

When select you can choose if you’d prefer an image or video. The rest is the exact same process of setting up an ad including budgets, audiences and targeting options.

Geostickers on IG

In another similarity to SnapChat, IG have rolled out geostickers. This addition is within Instagram stories. They work like Snapchat stickers do, allowing the user to select a sticker of their location. You can go and select a location like I have done in the picture- choosing my office- tagged as Katie Colella Social. Not quite as glamorous as New York!  Viewers can then touch that location sticker and view the location page for that place- that is populated with IG posts!
